We are an interdisciplinary group of student-researchers based at the University of Toronto working to combat algorithmic control.

Ana Luisa da Silva

Ana is a student studying journalism with expertise in mobile and data journalism practices. She has worked as a content creator and data analyst, as well as a curator for media and marketing organizations. She is also passionate about fashion, and is a member of the Brazilian Student Association.

Simrit Khabra

Simrit is graduating from the Bachelor of Information program. Her research interests include decentralized infrastructures, algorithmic literacy, and radical design practices. Simrit plans to use what she learned at U of T towards developing technologies with her community.

Zahireen Tarefdar

Zahireen is double-majoring in International Relations & Peace, Conflict, and Justice Studies. She has worked in climate governance, and is interested in multi-disciplinary approaches to digital technology and internet history. In her spare time, she is learning to be a better cook.

Jehan Vakharia

Jehan is a cognitive science student and computer science specialist. He is currently doing research in human computer interaction (HCI) and artificial intelligence (AI), with the Intelligent Adaptive Interventions Lab. He also dabbles in artistry and designed The Algorithmic You’s glorious logo.

Mariam Zaidi

Mariam is a third year student studying Ethics, Society and Law and Health Studies at the University of Toronto. She is interested in looking at data privacy and the internet of things through a legal lens. She is also the host of “JuxtaPod” for Juxtaposition Global Health Magazine, and she loves to read.

Monica J. Henderson

Monica is a Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto and Research Assistant for The eQuality Project. Her research looks at the impact of digital literacy on digital citizenship practices, with a focus on algorithmic and data literacies.

Katie Mackinnon

Katie is a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto and Research Assistant for The eQuality Project. She researches histories of the web, including early uses of the internet by young people in the 1990s and the popular web-host, ‘GeoCities’.

Leslie Regan Shade

Leslie is a Professor in the Faculty of Information at the University of Toronto, and Co-Principal Investigator of The eQuality Project. Her research focus since the mid-1990’s has been on the social and policy aspects of information and communication technologies (ICTs), with particular concerns towards issues of gender, youth and political economy.
