a guide to virtual allyship and algorithms

Social media has been critical in sharing important resources for the Black Lives Matter movement. ⁣

But sometimes good intentions (particularly if you are an ally) can produce unintended negative consequences on social media. Check out our guide on virtual allyship & algorithms to consider some important questions before participating in a social media campaign (throwback to Black Out Tuesday). ⁣

It’s important to realize the space that each of us takes up in a greater algorithmic ecosystem (even if you don’t have that many followers, or have a private account), and how we, collectively, influence what gets seen on Instagram and what doesn’t. We hope that the questions outline in this post help guide your posting choices. ⁣

Our next post will be looking at the hidden history of the Black Out social media campaign, and we’ll have a Medium blog up soon exploring this topic in greater detail!
